The 2nd edition of the nationwide intersectoral dialogue conference “Stop the obesity epidemic in Poland – top-down leadership and bottom-up mobilization of support” is behind us, which we organized under the honorary patronage of Deputy Speaker of the Polish Parliament, Ms. Monika Wielichowska. Many thanks to all Partners, thank you to the speakers and participants present stationary and online on both days.
The event brought together representatives of central administration and local governments, academia, business, social organizations and the media. The first day of the conference, held at the Polish Parliament, was dedicated to the perspective of local stakeholders in obesity reduction, with a focus on the role of local governments, NGOs, business and local communities. The second day focused on top-down strategic leadership, i.e. modern, consistent interdepartmental and intersectoral cooperation and the creation of much-needed interventions and tools for change in the area of public health.
Both during the debates and in behind-the-scenes meetings, we talked about barriers to development and ways to effectively eliminate them, solutions for obesity reduction, best Polish and foreign practices, both in obesity prevention and obesity disease diagnosis and treatment.
As Marshal Monika Wielichowska said at the beginning of the conference – Obesity has become a systemic phenomenon, affecting wider and wider social groups, including – particularly worrying – Polish children and adolescents. This is a wake-up call, requiring intersectoral cooperation, effective unification of forces and tools, which is what the STOP Obesity Partnership is doing in its activities.
– The goal of this year’s conference was to present all the main circles of influence in the process of effective obesity reduction, to show their potential and know-how, as well as the possibility of real cross-sectoral and multi-ministerial voice and cooperation of all stakeholders. We need a combination of perspectives and forces, we need a constructive dialogue to create pathways for cooperation, to promote and scale the best solutions for an ecosystem for the health of Polish families,” said Marta Pawlowska and Malgorzata Galazka-Sobotka.
